Publishers can access their ISSN,ISBN Within 30 minutes-CEO National Library

The National Library of Nigeria is one of the few National Libraries in the world that have branches all over the country.

Apart from being the legal depositor of Nigeria,it is the only organization in Nigeria that is mandated to issue the International Standard Book Number(ISBN)and the International Standard  Serial Number(ISSN) to authors and publishers of books and serials respectively.

It was in view of this development that the NLN organized a-two day Sensitization workshop on Thursday and Friday in Jos,Plateau State on the Legal Compliance and Demonstration of the newly developed ISSN and ISBN APP.

Speaking on the outcome of the workshop,Prof.Lenrie Aina CEO National Library of Nigeria,remarked that the sensitization workshop was a success.

“It is great and very successful with participants converging from various states in the region and they were very vibrant and happy.

.Responding on consolidating on the gains and successes of the workshops, he said that they are already consolidating on their past successes, saying that the NLN has been going round the country in the past three years  and seminar papers were been presented in form of workshops.

Adding that all the papers has been turned into a compendium.

“We have been going round the country in the past three years and seminar papers were presented in terms of workshops. We also try to review the books with our participants culminated in a novel idea”.

On the gains recorded so far, the Chief Executive Officer of NLN added that publishers must obtain the International Standard Book Number(ISBN)before they publish but in the past it takes months to obtain it but now there is an APP and within 30 minutes publishers can get their ISSN,ISBN.

  Commenting on the imperatives of the sensitization workshop, Ag.Chief Librarian, Plateau State Library Board Simon Moses,said that it was very important for publishers to know how to access their ISSN,ISBN which will help them to document their materials and works.

“It is very important for publishers to know how to access their ISSN,ISBN for proper documentation of their published works”.

On the necessity of the Legal Deposit,he said that it is a law mandating all publishers to deposit all of their publications in the National Library.

On her part the Head of Branch NLN,Plateau StateMrs.Sarah Emmanuel Mshelia,,dded that despite the challenges encountered in the course of of the program in the area of invitation of participants and the paucity of funds they were able to surmount the challenges.

“Actually ,one of the challenges we had was in the area of publicity for invitation of participants which came on a short notice given to publishers and the paucity of funds but we were able to surmount it”

.Adding that they were able to exceed their expectation with the turn out of participants.

The highlight of the workshop was A Walk Through the:Handbook of Legal Deposit Compliance and International Publishing Standards in Nigeria   (Review of Presentations at previous Sensitization Workshop)and Introduction of the ISBN On-line App.

The workshop ended with a practical Demonstration of the on-line ISBN App.
