The Global Center for Media and Human Empowerment(GCMHE), has described as ‘shocking’ the death of a former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, who died on Sunday.
The media rights and empowerment group said that Mailafia contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria.
A statement signed by the Ag.Director-General of the GCMHE, Charles Ejoh, in Jos,capital of Plateau State,North-Central Nigeria on Sunday, titled, ‘GCMHE mourns Dr. Mailafia’s death,’ states, “The news about Dr. Obadiah Mailafia’s death this morning got to us in Jos today.
“We are, therefore, today thrown into another mourning mood. We mourn this distinguished banker and political reformer from Kaduna State who has contributed his quota to national development.
“We mourn the distinguished Nigerian personality who obtained a PhD from Oxford University.
“We mourn a political colossus who stood for the voiceless.
“While he was alive, Dr. Mailafia spoke against the the perceived injustice of the president Buhari led APC administration in Nigeria.
“We sympathise with his immediate family, the Kaduna State government and the Central Bank of Nigeria over his untimely demise.”
Recall that last year, while appearing on a radio programme with Nigeria Info Abuja 95.1FM, Mr Mailafia alleged that some pardoned terrorists revealed that a serving northern governor was a Boko Haram leader.
Mr Mailafia was invited for questioning by the State Security Service based on the allegation.
He was the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during the 2019 elections.
Mr Mailafia, 64, died on Sunday morning from an undisclosed illness.
