Defending champions Al Ahly suffered a second defeat in three years away to Simba in the Caf Champions League, going down 1-0 at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Tuesday.

The Red Devils had succumbed to a loss in Tanzania in 2019 and suffered defeat by the same scoreline once again as a solitary strike from Luis Miquissone led Simba to another memorable win, and three points clear atop Group A.

AS Vita bounced back from defeat at home to Simba in Kinshasa with a 4-1 thumping of Al-Merrikh in Omdurman. Obed Mukokiani scored twice for the Democratic Republic of Congo giants after the hosts had opened the scoring in Sudan.

In Group C, Wydad Casablanca got their 2020-21 campaign up and running with a 1-0 win over Petro Atletico at the Estadio 11 de Novembro. Ayoub El Kaabi scored the only goal for the visiting Morrocans in Luanda.

Kaizer Chiefs, who will face Wydad in a rescheduled tie in Burkina Faso on Sunday, were held to a 0-0 draw by Horoya AC at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

Zamalek were also held to a scoreless draw in their Group D fixture against Teungueth FC at Stade Lat-Dior in Thies. Last season’s runners-up have now played to successive goalless stalemates.

Elsewhere, Esperance de Tunis came from behind again, this time to conjure a point in a 1-1 draw away to MC Alger at Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers.

Alger opened the scoring through Billel Bensaha, who is currently on-loan at the club from the Blood and Gold, before a second-half equaliser from Algerian midfielder Raouf Benguit for the Tunisian giants.
